Guide to Visiting Yellowstone National Park in an RV

Yellowstone National Park is a true gem of the United States and is a sprawling expanse of natural wonder located primarily in the state of Wyoming, with parts extending into Montana and Idaho. Known for its geothermal wonders, diverse wildlife, and breathtaking landscapes, visiting Yellowstone is a dream destination for many travelers and RV enthusiasts.

Discover everything you need to know about visiting Yellowstone National Park and if you choose to travel in an RV, get started with our list of where to stay for an unforgettable experience.

Visiting Yellowstone National Park

Yellowstone National Park

Yellowstone is the first and oldest national park in the world, established in 1872. Encompassing over 2.2 million acres, the park is home to a unique combination of geysers, hot springs, waterfalls, canyons, forests, and a large population of wildlife. The park’s most famous feature, Old Faithful, is a geyser that erupts at regular intervals, captivating thousands of visitors a year with its impressive displays.

Yellowstone National Park is accessible by car, and the journey to the park itself is a picturesque experience. The main entrances to the park are located in Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho. The West Entrance near West Yellowstone, Montana, is a popular entry point.

Exploring Yellowstone in an RV

RV travel is an excellent way to explore Yellowstone, as it offers the flexibility to move around the park and experience its wonders at your own pace. Here are some key points to consider when exploring Yellowstone in an RV:

1. RV Size Restrictions: Be aware of size restrictions on certain roads and campgrounds within the park. Some areas have limitations on RV length due to narrow roads and tight turns.
2. Campsites: Yellowstone offers several RV-friendly campgrounds, but they tend to fill up quickly, especially during peak tourist seasons. Reservations are highly recommended and can be made through the National Park Service’s website.
3. Hookups and Amenities: Most of Yellowstone’s campgrounds offer limited or no hookups (water, electricity, and sewer). Prepare to dry camp (boondock) or utilize generator hours if your RV lacks self-contained capabilities.
4. Road Conditions: Road conditions can vary due to weather, especially in spring and fall. Check the park’s official website or visitor centers for up-to-date road closures and conditions.

RV Safety and Etiquette while Visiting Yellowstone National Park:

When visiting Yellowstone in an RV, it’s important to follow safety guidelines and park etiquette to ensure a fun and memorable adventure.

1. Wildlife Safety: Yellowstone is home to diverse wildlife, including bison, bears, wolves, and elk. Maintain a safe distance from animals and never approach or feed them.
2. Geothermal Areas: Stay on designated paths in geothermal areas to prevent accidents and protect delicate thermal features. The ground can be dangerously hot and fragile.
3. Speed Limits: Observe speed limits and road rules within the park to ensure the safety of all visitors and wildlife.
4. Respect Quiet Hours: Many campgrounds have quiet hours, typically from 10 PM to 6 AM. Be considerate of fellow campers and adhere to these guidelines.

Planning Your Itinerary:

Yellowstone is vast, and planning your itinerary in advance will help you make the most of your visit. Here are some top attractions you won’t want to miss while visiting:

1. Old Faithful: Witness the iconic geyser’s eruptions, which occur approximately every 90 minutes. The Old Faithful area also features a visitor center and a boardwalk around the thermal features.
2. Grand Prismatic Spring: One of the park’s most stunning features, this large and colorful hot spring is located in the Midway Geyser Basin.
3. Yellowstone Lake: Enjoy scenic views, fishing, and boating on the largest high-elevation lake in North America.
4. Grand Canyon of Yellowstone: Marvel at the breathtaking waterfalls and colorful canyon walls in this awe-inspiring area.

BEST Things To Do In Breckenridge, Colorado When You Are On A Budget

BEST Things To Do In Breckenridge, Colorado When You Are On A Budget

Breckenridge, Colorado is a beautiful place to visit any time of the year.

However, the winter ski and snowboard season is the most popular time for families to vacation.

Whether you choose to visit in the summer or winter, there are some great budget-friendly activities the whole family can enjoy.

February 2021, my family and I went on a 5-day Ski/Snowboarding Trip to Breckenridge and enjoyed every moment!

The mountains are breathtaking with the highest peak of 12,998 ft.

best things to do in Breckenridge Colorado

We even got to experience a snowstorm that dropped over 12 inches of snow. As native Texans, it was a glorious sight to see!

During our trip, we were able to go sledding, hiking, Ski/Snowboard, and more. Therefore, based on our experience, I wanted to put together a list of some great things you can do in Breckenridge, Colorado when your family is on a budget.

1. Ride the Gondola – It’s FREE

Breckenridge Gondola

Image Credit: Max Robolox – Google Images

Riding the Gondola is the BEST way to see the gorgeous town from above. Usually, you must have a ski lift in order to experience the awesome views, but not in Breck.

The Gondola is the perfect family activity to enjoy the scenic area.

There are two mid-stations that drop off passengers between Shock Hill and the base of Peak 7. It rises 391 feet in elevation and has 121 cars total.

So take the family and enjoy the sights from above!

2. Take a hike

Things to do in Breckenridge

Anywhere you hike in the rocky mountainous terrain, you are bound to see some epic scenery.

The wilderness and views you could experience are memories waiting to be made.

Plus, It is a great activity to get outside, explore, and get a little bit of exercise as well, all for FREE!

There are so many hiking trails in Breckenridge, that I suggest checking out alltrails.com to find the best one for you. They rank them from easy to difficult depending on your hiking abilities.

3. Window Shop / Walk Around Main Street

Main Street Breckenridge is the perfect little place to stroll around and enjoy a relaxed walk-through town.

There are so many cute places to shop and to pick up some delicious coffee.

If you ever get a chance to visit, no matter what time of the year, take the time to walk around and support the local shops. Even if it is a simple t-shirt or coffee purchase.

4. Go Sledding (Free Winter Activity)

This is one FREE activity that is super fun for all ages!

Since we were there in the winter, we got a chance to go sledding down the town’s hill.

The location of this hill is behind the elementary school and next to an activity center with tennis courts and a dog park.

There are sleds that some leave behind, or you can pick some up at the local shops.

Our whole family enjoyed the free sledding so much that we went more than once!

5. Go Mountain Biking

If you happen to go to Breckenridge during the gorgeous Rocky Mountain Summers, biking is a great way to enjoy the area.

You can bring your own or rent a bike while you are there. (Check out Groupon for deals)

This is an inexpensive way to get some exercise, explore the outdoors, and enjoy the beauty of the Breckenridge Mountains.

6. Go Skiing / Snowboarding

Okay, so we all know Skiing or Snowboarding isn’t necessarily a budget-friendly activity.

The ski lift tickets alone are pricy!

However, budgeting at least one-day, if you are going during Ski Season to the Mountains, is recommended if you enjoy the activity.

We were on a budget and decided to do one day of snowboarding while we visited the town in February.

The cost was well worth the experience for us!

If you are renting your skis and/or snowboard gear (including a helmet, pants (if needed), or jacket) check out AMR Rental Ski and Board.

They provided us with great gear, all fitted to our liking and for half the price of other rental places.

7. Visit Local Museums

Breckenridge, Colorado is historically a gold mining/sawmill town.

There are some great museums that the whole family can visit to get a piece of the history. Including a high line railroad museum with a Train engine and themed playground specifically created for kids to enjoy.

Here is a list of some of the museums that are available to visit.

Barney Ford Museum

Edwin Carter Discovery Center

Briggle House Museum

High Line Railroad Museum

Breckenridge Sawmill Museum

You can check out more museums and tours here: Gobreck.com

Please keep in mind hours may be subject to change. Most of these museums are free to discover and donations are accepted.

8. Check out Groupon for Local Deals

One thing I love to check when I am in a new town to see what activities could be available on Groupon.

Sometimes you can find something really cool to do and for a cheaper price.

Final Thoughts

Visiting Breckenridge Colorado was a wonderful and memorable vacation.

If I ever get the chance to go back, I would in a heartbeat. There is so much to explore in the area, that our trip was not enough time.

So, if you love the outdoors, extreme sports, amazing coffee, and kind people then Breckenridge is a perfect vacation spot for you! Enjoy and explore the beautiful sights it has to offer!

Lone Star Court Hotel Review | A Great Place to Stay in Austin, Texas

Lone Star Court Hotel Review | A Great Place to Stay in Austin, Texas

If you love staying at unique hotels and enjoy new experiences, then the Lone Star Court by Valencia Group is a great option.

My husband chose this hotel because the images were warm and inviting. After some research, we fell in love with the concept and thought we would enjoy staying in a place that looked fun and unique.

Lone Star Court is in a location called The Domain in Austin, Texas. It is surrounded by apartments, shopping, and delicious eateries. Perfect for the socialite and the introverted at heart.

Lone Star Court

Lone Star Court gives you the glamping hotel experience but in the big suburban city.

The hotel is a twist of modern retro with a touch of country chic. It brings in the past and merges it with the present today.

Fun Fact: Lone Star Court is rated #10 for Hotels in Austin by TripAdvisor and won travelers choice 2020.

Checking in Process

The check-in process was a breeze. The lobby is a nice and quaint space with a warm welcoming feel. You will also receive a free beverage of your choice, either bottled water or soda.

As you check-in, you will receive two keys, a map of the property with room location, and a brochure with all things you can do at the hotel and surrounding the hotel.

After checking in at the front office, we made our way to the closest parking space to our room location. This hotel has FREE parking and a lot of open availability around every building for easy access to all rooms.

Our room was located on the second floor with quick access either by elevator or by stairs.

All About the Property

Lone Star Court is located on 4 acres with three curved buildings. Each building is set up with the main walkway/balconies so everyone can enjoy interior courtyard views from their room.

The courtyard offers gorgeous landscaping and a pavilion that is perfect for their weekend entertainment, gatherings, or even weddings.

I remember saying to my husband while we were enjoying our drinks on the patio and listening to the music, that the hotel would be a great place to have an outdoor wedding. All the guests could book rooms and enjoy the entire place.

This hotel is also the perfect place for a date night couples that are looking to get away, enjoy some entertainment, drinks, yard games, S’ more’s, and more. They even have an option to add a S’ more package on to your room for the whole experience.

There are three different packages you could purchase: The Glamping Package, the Date Night Package, and the Pet Package.

YES, they are pet friendly, so you can bring your furry friends!

Here are some more facts and amenities you should expect while staying at Lone Star Court in Austin, Texas.

All about the Room and Accessibility

The room we received was a hearing-impaired room on the second floor in building E. After entering our room, about 5 minutes had passed, and we received a call from the front desk asking us how our room was and made sure everything was okay.

That was a first for me! I don’t know if it was because they gave us a hearing-impaired room or if that’s standard with all guests.

We enjoyed the location of our room because it wasn’t right above the music playing but we were still able to hear the band play at night.

Our room was spacious, clean, and inviting. The King Bed was comfortable and cozy. The colors were bright and the special unique touches of cool retro lighting and decor pulled the room together nicely.

I absolutely loved the bedding! The Egyptian cotton linens, the down feather mattress toppers, comforters, and pillows are so luxurious and comfortable.

We slept so well it’s inspired me to buy a feather down topper and pillows for our RV bed.

How did we get our Rate and was it worth the price?

We booked our stay at a rate through our insurance with USAA. The room price we paid was around $150 with taxes and fees. It was a simple booking process and only charged us after our stay.

Due to the pandemic, we had 24 hours up to check-in time to cancel for free.

I wish we would have checked the package options and prices on their website before booking with USAA. We will probably never use USAA “discounts” again because we could have received a better deal straight from their website.

What we learned: Always check the website prices before booking to make sure you’re getting the best deal with any Hotel.

For being a 3 out 5 Star on the Hotel Luxury rating, I believe the price for the unique hotel experience and the amenities that are available is on point.

When did we travel?

My husband booked our stay for Mid-August right before school was scheduled to begin. It was an end of summer small getaway that we wanted to take and enjoy.

Choosing to stay in the middle of a pandemic, the hotel adhered to all the safety precautions and guidelines.

All staff wore masks and they monitored the pool by allowing 18 guests at a time with 2-hour time slots for each family to enjoy swim time.

Did we enjoy our stay?

We absolutely did enjoy our stay and would book this hotel again for future trips to Austin.

We love Austin because there are so many outdoor activities to do and explore.

The property alone is worth the stay with the courtyard, restaurant, and games. It’s perfect for families with kids of all ages!

There are plenty of activities and options to enjoy a full day and night within the hotel property alone.

One thing I loved about the hotel is the feeling you get while inside. You completely forget how busy the exterior is with all the shopping and eateries.  Plus, there are gates to keep non-hotel guests out to provide safety since the hotel is surrounded by apartments and shopping.

We would definitely stay at this hotel again and recommend this place to our friends and family!

Final Thoughts

After our enjoyable stay, I wished we would have booked an additional night. It’s worth the price for the amenities and location in Austin. I can see why this hotel is ranked #10 in Austin, Texas by TripAdvisor.
